Texas Tech men’s basketball has begun its first official practice ahead of the 2026-27 season, with Jamichael Stillwell, Darrion Williams and Donovan Atwell still listed on the active roster. Each player has sought a temporary injunction in a separate eligibility case.
Williams is back with the Red Raiders after playing at NC State in 2025-26. He previously spent two seasons at Texas Tech and was part of the team that reached the 2024-25 Elite Eight. Coach Grant McCasland called Williams’ return an unusual process and said Williams ultimately asked whether a scholarship could be held for him.
Williams is one of 31 players in a case that led to an injunction allowing a fifth season. Stillwell and Atwell are pursuing another season through separate cases.
McCasland said the roster was assembled around athleticism, competitiveness and experience. He also pointed to the players’ desire to win and commitment to each other as reasons for optimism. The coach said Texas Tech will move forward with players who are eligible and has enough capable players to manage roster changes.
Atwell made 45.8% of his 3-point attempts last season while taking 8.4 per game, a career high, and earned honorable mention from the All-Big 12. The Red Raiders are set to begin the season Nov. 2 at United Supermarkets Arena.
