Voters in The Colony's Place 4 City Council district are expected to return to the polls Saturday, Dec. 12, for a runoff, according to an update the city posted Thursday afternoon.

No candidate won more than half the vote in the three-way race on Nov. 3. Incumbent Dan Rainey finished first in unofficial Denton County results with 2,191 votes, or 48.28%. Dan McNew was second with 1,325 votes, or 29.20%, and Tim Costello third with 1,022, or 22.52%. The city's notice does not name the runoff candidates.

Next steps

The City Council plans to canvass the returns and declare official results on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and is expected to formally call the runoff at that meeting, the city said. Early voting for the runoff is scheduled for Nov. 30 through Dec. 8.

The city cautioned that mail, military and provisional ballots had not all been counted and could still change the unofficial totals. The closest contest is Place 5, where incumbent Perry Schrag led Matthew Michaelson 1,366 to 1,359. As of the county's last update early Wednesday, that race was listed with four of its six precincts reporting.

The other two district races were not close. In Place 3, incumbent Brian Wade won with 2,168 votes, or 70.80%, over Eldon J. Pipes. In Place 6, Matthew Wheeler defeated Mayor Pro Tem Joel Marks, 2,025 votes to 1,241.

Rainey's current Place 4 term began in November 2023 and ends this month, according to the city's council page. The city directs questions to the City Secretary's Office and points voters to the Denton County Elections Administration website for election details.
