The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have been fined $500,000 each by the NFL due to a brawl that occurred during a recent joint practice. The league stressed the importance of sportsmanship, especially during such collaborative training sessions where unsportsmanlike conduct can lead to injuries.
Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, acknowledged the seriousness of the fines and plans to contest the decision. He expressed that the actions seen during the practice, which included players removing their helmets and engaging in fights, do not reflect positively on either team or the league.
"That's pretty harsh, I mean, pretty stiff," Jones commented, showing his awareness of the league's position on the matter.
Should the fines remain in place, Jones indicated that he would also consider penalizing the players involved in the altercations. Notably, linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku was mentioned for removing the helmet of Saints offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga and striking offensive lineman Erik McCoy.
Saints rookie Brock Rechsteiner was also noted for his involvement in several incidents, including a physical altercation with Cowboys cornerback Caelan Carson and a move resembling a German suplex on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson. Further information regarding the appeal process or additional player fines has yet to be provided.
