The Dallas Cowboys have added running back Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons and released Israel Abanikanda, changing the team’s backfield after a 69-yard rushing showing against the New York Giants in Week 1.
Abanikanda appeared in six NFL games before his release, all for the New York Jets in the 2023 season. His departure opened a roster spot for Goodson. Abanikanda did not secure a consistent role in the NFL, although he produced 1,431 yards and 20 touchdowns on 239 carries during his 2022 season at Pitt.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said New York’s defensive front created problems early, with penetration affecting Dallas’ running game. He said the Cowboys lost the physical battle at the line of scrimmage. Schottenheimer also said Javonte Williams struggled to find openings early, before Dallas adjusted after halftime.
