Book lovers can get first pick at the Friends of The Colony Public Library's fall book sale on Friday, Nov. 13, one of several events on the library's November calendar that also includes a storm chaser's talk on severe weather and a series of online conversations with authors.

The book sale

Preview night runs 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at the City Hall Annex, 6804 Main St. Admission is $5, and it is free for members of the Friends group, teachers and city staff.

The main sale follows from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the same building. This year the Friends are pairing it with a local vendor fair; booth space costs $30, and vendors are asked to contact the Friends group to reserve a spot. The city's listing says the sale helps support the Friends group.

Classes in the building

  • Home Buying 101, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3: a beginner workshop led by two industry professionals on preparing to buy a first home. Registration is recommended but not required.
  • Severe Weather Awareness, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12: a professional storm chaser explains severe weather in the library's multipurpose room. The program is for ages 14 and older.
  • Medicare seminar, 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14: a free educational session for people becoming eligible for Medicare.
  • The Human Edge in an AI-Driven Job Market, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18: retired Microsoft technologist Maria Joseph covers the AI skills employers want and how to prepare for AI-related interview questions.

Online author talks

Four virtual events require online registration through the library:

  • Nov. 3, 1 p.m.: Asha Frost, author of "You Are the Medicine."
  • Nov. 11, 1 p.m.: journalist Paul Vigna on "The Almightier: How Money Became God, Greed Became Virtue, and Debt Became Sin."
  • Nov. 12, 1 p.m.: chef Pyet DeSpain, the first winner of the TV competition "Next Level Chef," on her cookbook "Rooted in Fire."
  • Nov. 19, 6 p.m.: bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse on her "Between Earth and Sky" fantasy trilogy.

Closures

City offices, facilities and the library will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day; trash and recycling pickup will not change. The library will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, and stay closed through Sunday, Nov. 29, for Thanksgiving, reopening at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1.
