The Dallas Cowboys will be without running back Malik Davis against the New York Giants after he injured his hip during Friday’s practice. Davis was taken away from the field by cart, and further evaluations were planned.

The duration of his absence remains unknown, although Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Dallas was preparing for an extended absence and cited a source describing the injury as “bad.” Todd Archer of ESPN also reported that Davis would not play in the opener.

Javonte Williams is expected to continue as Dallas’ primary running back. In 16 starts during the 2025 season, Williams ran for 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on 252 attempts. He added 35 receptions totaling 137 yards, along with two receiving touchdowns.

Emari Demercado may see an increased role behind Williams. Dallas claimed him on Sept. 1 after the Kansas City Chiefs waived him. Demercado spent his first three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, gaining 819 yards and scoring three touchdowns on 126 carries. He also recorded 50 catches for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.

Hunter Luepke and practice-squad running back Israel Abanikanda are other available choices. Luepke has mainly played fullback but also has experience at running back and other offensive spots. Abanikanda previously played for the New York Jets. Davis had 12 preseason carries for 68 yards, averaged 5.7 yards per attempt and scored once as a receiver.
