The city has filled in the music for this year's American Heroes festival, its annual tribute to veterans and first responders.

Fastball is set to play from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and Smash Mouth from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, according to the festival pages the city updated last week. A drone show choreographed to patriotic music is planned for about 8 p.m., launched from The Athletic Club grounds so the festival itself is the place to watch.

Admission is free. The event page lists hours of noon to 10 p.m. at The Athletic Club, 4100 Blair Oaks Drive.

The ceremony

Between the two bands, at 5:45 p.m., Holley-Riddle American Legion Post 21 will present the Heroes Ceremony on the main stage. The ceremony includes a video slideshow of local veterans photographed during their years in uniform. Families can submit a picture, along with the veteran's name, branch and dates of service, through a form on the city website.

The deadline is Monday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m.

Rest of the day

  • Community stage: Local performers fill a noon to 2:30 p.m. slot; applications have closed.
  • Car, truck and bike show: Registration runs 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (pre-registration from 11 to noon), with voting from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and awards in the afternoon. It has 30 categories, and the entry fee is $20 per vehicle.
  • Carnival: Rides set up in the south parking lot across from The Colony High School, opening at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, running noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15.
  • Heroes Hut: Children 3 to 12 can make dog tags, color a patriotic mural and write Christmas cards for troops serving overseas, free, from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Food and drink: A lineup of food trucks includes one run by the Legion post. Coolers and outside alcohol are not allowed; beer will be sold on the grounds.

Concert seating is on the lawn, so the city suggests bringing chairs or blankets. A $50 VIP package adds heated premium seating, a hot catered meal, two drink tickets and a private bar. A silent auction closes at 6 p.m.

Questions go to the Parks and Recreation Department at 972-625-1106.
