The Dallas Cowboys have announced the signing of veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, Texas. Miller, who is entering his 15th NFL season, aims to bolster the Cowboys' defense, particularly in pass protection, with a remarkable total of 138.5 career sacks, making him the leader among active players.
Miller's arrival introduces competition at the edge rusher position, potentially threatening the roster spots of several players. He is expected to fill the role of left outside linebacker under defensive coordinator Christian Parker during passing situations. Currently, Rashan Gary holds the starting left outside linebacker position, while rookie Malachi Lawrence is also training there.
On the right side, second-year player Donovan Ezeiruaku is set to be the right outside linebacker, with James Houston expected to be a key rotational player. This situation leaves limited opportunities for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, both vying for the same position and needing to prove their worth to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Liufau may possess trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. The Cowboys are also considering other players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising candidates. While the immediate effects of Miller's signing are apparent in the edge rusher group, specific details regarding roster changes are still pending.
