The Cowboys have signed veteran running back Emari Demercado after Malik Davis suffered a season-ending hip injury during Friday’s practice. Demercado is expected to provide depth and help on special teams.
Davis was injured during a non-contact outdoor workout at The Star in Frisco that was only a little more extensive than a walk-through. He was taken away by cart, underwent surgery later that night and was placed on injured reserve for the season.
The Cowboys had expected him to contribute in Sunday’s game against the Giants after he won the No. 2 running back job behind Javonte Williams during most of August.
Stephen Jones, the team’s chief operating officer, told 105.3 The Fan that Davis’s injury was disappointing and said his work had secured the backup position. Jones added that other players would now be needed. Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, could see more opportunities, either through a game elevation or a spot on the active roster.
Davis backed up Williams last season, gaining 252 rushing yards and scoring two touchdowns. He joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022, appeared in 12 games as a rookie and ran for 161 yards.
