Kyler Owens holds two distinct leadership positions at The Colony High School, serving as a senior captain and outside linebacker for the football team and as the head drum major for the marching band. During home games, Owens frequently transitions between these duties, moving from the field to the podium to lead the musicians during halftime performances.
Head coach and athletic director Rudy Rangel described the logistical challenge of managing Owens' schedule. Rangel noted that the coaching staff holds offensive meetings first to ensure Owens is present for defensive sessions. The coach explained that Owens often sprints from a play to the band podium, leads the ensemble, and then returns to the field.
Band director Michael Larkin recalled a conversation with Owens in which the student expressed a desire to conduct the band while wearing football pads. Larkin stated that this goal has now been realized. Both coaches and the band director noted that Owens initially joined the football program with a lower body weight than preferred and had previously considered leaving the band program.
Owens attributes his ability to balance these roles to his family. "Everybody in my family is the main reason why I am where I am today," Owens said. He also stated that he serves as an example to younger students by demonstrating that it is possible to excel in both athletics and music.
The leadership skills required for one role appear to transfer to the other. Rangel observed that Owens organizes players on the football field with the same precision he applies to the band. Larkin added that Owens ensures not only his own knowledge of the music but also that the entire band and leadership team are prepared.
