The Oakland Athletics secured a 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday, August 22, at Daikin Park. The decisive momentum shifted in the eighth inning when the visitors scored three unearned runs to take the lead. This rally broke a five-game losing streak for the Athletics, who finished the season with a 50-80 record.

The Astros, who were the home team, fell to a 65-65 mark. Attendance at the venue reached 31,009 fans.

Game Flow

Oakland established an early lead in the third inning when Walton hit a 422-foot home run to center field. The Astros responded in the fourth inning when Diaz doubled to left field, allowing Walker to score and tie the game at 1-1. Houston regained the lead in the seventh inning with two separate plays.

First, Varsho homered to left field, traveling 358 feet. Later in the frame, Peña singled to center, scoring Wade Jr. and moving to second base.

The pivotal sequence occurred in the eighth inning. McNeil scored on a wild pitch by Sousa, while Gelof advanced to third. Butler then singled to right field, scoring Gelof to make it 3-3. Finally, Heim grounded out to shortstop, allowing Butler to score and giving the Athletics the 4-3 lead. No further runs were scored in the remaining innings.

Pitching Performance

Jacob Lopez started for the Athletics, pitching six innings while surrendering three hits and one earned run. He also struck out nine batters and issued one walk. Luis Medina earned the win, pitching one inning and allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Hogan Harris recorded the hold with one scoreless inning, striking out one batter. Elvis Alvarado closed the game with a save, pitching one hitless and scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

For Houston, Hunter Brown started and pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run. He walked three batters and struck out four. AJ Blubaugh pitched one and one-third innings without allowing a hit or an earned run, striking out two batters.

Bennett Sousa took the loss, pitching one-third of an inning while allowing two hits and three earned runs. Bryan Abreu pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two batters.
