The Houston Astros established control early in Thursday’s contest at Angel Stadium, jumping out to an insurmountable lead before the middle innings. Hayden Wesneski delivered the performance of his young career, securing his first major league victory while anchoring a pitching staff that held Los Angeles to just four runs.
Wesneski (1-0) pitched 5.2 innings for the win, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters. He was supported by a bullpen trio of Bennett Sousa (4 holds), Steven Okert (15 holds), and closer Bryan Abreu (7 saves). Abreu closed the door in the ninth, retiring the side with one strikeout to earn his seventh save of the season.
Scoring Sequence Unfolds
Houston’s offense exploded in the first inning against Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez. Grissom doubled to left field, driving in Neto and Trout for a 2-0 lead. Adell followed with a single to left, scoring Grissom to make it 3-0.
The Angels responded in the second inning when Diaz homered to left-center field (425 feet), cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, Houston regained momentum in the third when Peña homered to center field (401 feet), extending the lead to 4-1.
A pivotal six-inning surge proved decisive for Houston. Smith doubled to left field, bringing home Diaz and Trammell for a 6-3 advantage. The run total increased further as Smith crossed the plate on wild pitches by Angels reliever Mitch Farris (0-3), who took the loss after allowing three earned runs in one inning of work.
