Texas Advances Driverless Vehicle Industry, Promising Traffic Relief for The Colony

A study indicates that fully autonomous vehicles could reduce traffic delays in Dallas-Fort Worth by 33 percent.

A recent study from Southern Methodist University suggests that fully autonomous vehicles could decrease traffic delays across the Dallas-Fort Worth area by up to 33 percent, without the need for new highway construction. This finding holds significance for The Colony, located just 30 miles from Dallas, as it may influence local traffic conditions in the future.

The research, led by Khaled Abdelghany from SMU's Institute for Engineering and Humanity, in collaboration with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, utilized traffic modeling funded in part by the region's council of governments. Through 25 experiments simulating traffic conditions in 2045, the study examined scenarios with varying levels of autonomous vehicle adoption.

In the scenario where all vehicles were autonomous, traffic delays could potentially drop by 33 percent, with a minimum of 19 percent reduction in time spent in congestion.

The mechanism behind this potential improvement is based on the behavior of human drivers, who often create traffic jams through erratic braking and inconsistent spacing. According to Abdelghany, autonomous vehicles could alleviate these issues by enabling smoother and more coordinated driving.

Currently, Texas is at the forefront of the driverless vehicle industry, particularly in freight transport. Aurora Innovation initiated commercial driverless deliveries between Dallas and Houston in April 2025, marking the first such service in the United States. These trucks operate along the I-45 corridor, which is a critical route for truck freight in Texas, handling a significant volume of goods.

In addition to Aurora, several companies, including Kodiak Robotics and Waymo Via, are also developing autonomous trucking services in Texas, solidifying the state’s position as a leader in this sector. On the passenger side, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has expanded its services to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, with plans for broader availability soon.

While the advancement of driverless technology raises questions about job displacement, the industry asserts that new roles will emerge. Positions will be needed for vehicle maintenance, remote monitoring, and logistics, among others. Industry estimates suggest that autonomous vehicles could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.

However, the study's promising 33 percent reduction in traffic delays is contingent on full adoption of autonomous vehicles, a scenario that may not be realized in the near future. Research indicates that a significant portion of autonomous vehicle operation hours may occur without passengers, which could counteract expected congestion benefits. Additionally, safety concerns persist regarding the interaction of autonomous vehicles with emergency responders.

In preparation for the growth of this industry, Texas has established regulations for driverless vehicles. Senate Bill 2807, effective September 1, 2025, mandates that operators of Level 4 autonomous vehicles obtain permits from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, which will also oversee safety measures.

As Texas continues to develop its autonomous vehicle infrastructure, the actual impact on traffic and public transit will become clearer in the coming years. The outcomes of these advancements will be particularly relevant for The Colony and its residents, as they may influence local traffic patterns and job opportunities in the area.
