The rapid growth of data centers in North Texas, driven by the artificial intelligence boom, is leading to a critical shortage of skilled electricians and HVAC technicians. As the region positions itself as a national hub for data center development, the demand for these tradespeople is outpacing the available workforce.

According to a Texas Tribune analysis, there are at least 248 data centers planned across Texas, with 86 of them located in North Texas. These facilities consume vast amounts of electricity, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has reported that data centers are responsible for most of the new electricity demand. ERCOT anticipates that the state's electricity demand could reach 368 gigawatts by 2032, although not all proposed projects may come to fruition.

The Texas Workforce Commission indicates that the workforce regions encompassing Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central Texas will require nearly 3,000 more electricians by 2032, reflecting a 15% increase from staffing levels expected in 2026. In the Dallas area alone, there are projected to be about 1,035 electrician openings annually, primarily due to retirements and workforce turnover.

This labor shortage is felt nationwide, with estimates suggesting a shortfall of up to 499,000 workers in the data center construction sector. As a result, wages for electricians and HVAC specialists have risen, with data center workers earning approximately one-third more than their counterparts in standard construction roles. The demand for skilled trades is expected to create opportunities for young North Texans, as trade programs and apprenticeships become increasingly attractive alternatives to traditional four-year degrees.

Dallas is about 21 miles south of The Colony.
