The Denton County Criminal District Attorney's Office wants to switch to a more expensive version of its digital evidence software, one that adds artificial intelligence tools to sort through video, documents, phone data and recorded jail calls.

Commissioners Court will consider the purchase from Axon Enterprise at its 9 a.m. meeting Tuesday, Oct. 27. The 10-year contract totals $4,191,360.

What the upgrade adds

The county bought Axon's Justice Premier evidence system for the DA's office in 2024. The new tier, Justice Premier Plus, includes a tool the memo calls BriefOne, which scans digital evidence and writes case summaries meant to cut the time spent on long footage, documents and transcripts.

The memo from purchasing director Scott Arledge lists other features:

  • translation of documents, video and audio in more than 57 languages
  • a viewer that lays out data pulled from cell phones, such as texts, call logs and app records
  • a folder system for organizing evidence
  • links to the jail call system that produce transcripts, translations and AI analysis of calls
"Prosecutors are overwhelmed with digital evidence," the memo says, adding that the tools are meant to save time and reduce the need to ask for more staff.

The cost

The 2024 contract was worth $2,977,616 over 10 years and four months and would be canceled if the new one is approved, a difference of $1,213,744. Payments would start at about $255,647 in the year beginning Nov. 1 and rise each year, reaching about $508,967 in the final year. The money would come from the county's public safety and courts technology budget.

The purchase would run through a Sourcewell cooperative contract, which the memo says was competitively bid. The DA's office would manage the software.
