TCU Athletics has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, resolving a dispute that arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident involving the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields. The university confirmed the restoration of access in a statement on September 4, highlighting that productive discussions facilitated the resolution of differences between the two parties.
The conflict began after a report by Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson on August 18, which detailed tensions in the locker room and alleged that coaches failed to address the situation adequately. The incident, which occurred on August 13, involved sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma, who claimed he was punched by Fields, resulting in serious injuries.
Following the report, TCU officials revoked the newspaper's credentials, citing threats made against Ezukanma.
Fields turned himself in to Tarrant County police on August 30, facing charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, and was later released on a $50,000 bond. During the period of revoked access, Johnson covered TCU's season opener against North Carolina from the stands in Dublin, Ireland, rather than from the press box.
