Southern Methodist University (SMU) has appointed Derek Gossler to the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's initiative to bolster its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by prioritizing revenue generation, which is essential in today’s college sports landscape.
Gossler arrives with more than 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticketing, and commercial strategy. His most recent role was at the University of Wyoming, where he served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer.
During his tenure there, he played a key role in significantly boosting cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and achieving record levels in ticket revenue and premium seating.
Before his time at Wyoming, Gossler contributed to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he helped secure five consecutive years of record fundraising. He also made notable contributions at Arizona State University, assisting in raising $86 million during a major fundraising campaign and facilitating the launch of the men's hockey program through substantial donor support.
Gossler’s diverse experience across various athletic departments equips him to effectively meet SMU's requirements as it navigates one of the wealthiest and largest markets in the country. His focus will be on maximizing revenue through innovative methods and enhancing relationships with fans, supporters, and corporate partners. Gossler's hiring underscores SMU's commitment to advancing its athletic programs nationally as the Mustangs transition into the ACC.
