The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver lineup with the addition of Jalen Hale, who transferred from Alabama, and Yannick Smith, previously of East Carolina. This move comes as the team seeks to recover from the loss of their top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before their graduation.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently sidelined due to a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players like tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, as well as running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. In Jennings' absence, redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has praised Smith for his size and ability to make contested catches, while also highlighting Hale's speed and agility in evading defenders.

Hale, a former five-star recruit, had a strong start at Alabama but missed the entire 2024 season due to a significant knee injury. He appears to have regained his explosive playmaking abilities at SMU.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's experience in the SEC and his resilience, which he believes will enhance the team's offensive approach. Smith has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his time at East Carolina, showcasing an aggressive playing style that complements the Mustangs' downfield passing game.

Additionally, senior Yamir Knight returns after earning Offensive MVP honors in the Holiday Bowl, while sophomore Jalen Cooper is expected to take on a more significant role this season. With two weeks remaining in fall camp before facing Florida State on September 7, the team is concentrating on developing chemistry and solidifying their depth chart.

Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward commented on the competitive edge brought by Hale and Smith, noting their impact on the overall performance of the team.
