Reports from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram describe the incident as an aggravated assault, with a source stating that Fields was involved in a confrontation with an offensive teammate. It was noted that Fields had previously felt targeted by his peers, facing insults and threats, including being spat on.
Before the incident, Fields had sought assistance from the coaching staff multiple times regarding the rising tensions but received no reply. He joined TCU from Louisiana Tech this offseason and was anticipated to start as the free safety for the Horned Frogs. In 2025, Fields earned recognition as the Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, starting all games for Louisiana Tech.
He was the team's leading tackler with 92 stops and had three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
