BJ Edwards, who played for the SMU Mustangs, has announced his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards is eligible for an extra season of college basketball due to a temporary injunction that allows an additional year for the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards spent three seasons at SMU after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he played only 14 games. During his time in Dallas, he played under two head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield.
His most successful season was last year, where he participated in 28 games and averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, while also earning All-Conference defensive team honors.
Despite interest from SMU to keep him, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to enhance their roster after a 21-16 season, which included a 7-11 record in SEC play and a missed opportunity for the NCAA Tournament. Edwards' addition is seen as a key enhancement for the team as they prepare for the upcoming winter season.
