Jared Nuness, who spent over a decade as an assistant coach for Baylor's basketball team, has been handed a two-year show cause penalty by the NCAA following violations linked to sports betting. Nuness, the longest-serving assistant under head coach Scott Drew, resigned from his position in December, citing personal health concerns as the reason for his exit.
In his resignation statement, Nuness expressed appreciation for his time at Baylor, stating, "Being part of this program has been one of the great honors of my career." He noted that focusing on his health was a significant factor in his decision to leave.
The NCAA's investigation found that Nuness engaged in unauthorized sports betting activities during his tenure at Baylor. From December 29, 2020, to November 28, 2025, he allegedly placed approximately 3,400 bets, amounting to around $38,000 on professional sports. Additionally, he permitted his son to utilize his betting accounts, which resulted in three bets totaling $170 on college competitions, none of which involved Baylor.
Nuness accepted full accountability for these violations, categorized by the NCAA as Level II infractions. The organization maintains strict regulations against betting by personnel to uphold the integrity of college sports. The NCAA's actions reflect ongoing concerns about sports betting in collegiate athletics, as Nuness is not the first to face consequences for similar violations.
