Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed and other injuries after an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields at the Walsh Athletic Complex on August 13. Witnesses reported that Fields, unhappy with Ezukanma's performance, punched him while he was seated and then kicked him in the back of the head, causing Ezukanma to lose consciousness.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his transfer to the ICU where scans confirmed a brain bleed. He was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a shoulder injury. Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, later released on a $50,000 bond.
In a text to TCU police, Fields expressed remorse for his actions and offered to pay for Ezukanma's medical expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the incident, stating it was out of character for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a former student at Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting receiver for the season, with TCU's next game against Grambling set for September 12.
