The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release of cornerback Josh Butler as part of their roster adjustments ahead of the new season. Butler, who joined the team in 2023 after competing in two spring football leagues, expressed both disappointment and pride following the news of his departure.
In a social media post, Butler reflected on his time with the Cowboys, noting that he had never allowed a touchdown during either the preseason or regular season, nor a pass over 20 yards. He shared his gratitude for the opportunity after returning to football following a four-year break.
During the preseason, Butler recorded six tackles and demonstrated his defensive capabilities in three games. Over his three seasons, he participated in six games, accumulating 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, an ACL injury in 2024 sidelined him for the entire 2023 season, limiting his contributions in 2025.
Despite his strong performance, Butler faced intense competition for cornerback positions, leading to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the possibility of signing him to their practice squad, recognizing his reliability when healthy. As the team continues to refine its roster in pursuit of a Super Bowl title in 2026, Butler's future remains uncertain, with no clear indications of his next steps.
