The Dallas Cowboys will host Washington next Sunday after opening the 2026 season with a 28-20 defeat to the New York Giants. Dallas was penalized eight times for 85 yards, while head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team fell short of its expected standard and needed better execution from coaches and players.
Rookie Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart completed passes for 230 yards and added 54 yards on the ground. The Cowboys struggled when he left the pocket, giving him opportunities to extend plays. Dallas also began this season with new defensive personnel after surrendering an NFL-high 30.1 points per game in 2025.
Dak Prescott finished 22 of 34 for 175 yards. He connected with CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams for touchdowns, and Williams also scored on a run. A taunting penalty against Williams after a touchdown forced Brandon Aubrey to attempt the extra point from a greater distance.
Schottenheimer said the coaching staff and players shared responsibility for the errors, including issues involving younger players, who he said must develop quickly. He called the loss a humbling result and said Dallas did not begin well on offense or defense.
