The Dallas Cowboys have made significant changes to their roster, particularly at the running back position. They have decided to retain Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke, leading to the release of draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the tough nature of these decisions, highlighting the potential both players had. He noted Malik Davis's consistent performance as a key factor in the team's choices. Schottenheimer suggested that Blue and Mafah may seek advice from Davis as they navigate their current circumstances.
In an effort to strengthen their lineup, the Cowboys have added running back Emari Demercado, who was picked up off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer pointed out Demercado's versatility, especially his capability to contribute on special teams, as a significant reason for the acquisition. The coach also mentioned his previous work with Demercado during their time in Arizona.
While discussing the potential for Blue or Mafah to return to the practice squad, Schottenheimer indicated that there were no assurances for either player. Currently, the Cowboys have filled 13 spots on their practice squad, which can accommodate up to 16 players.
This includes running back Israel Abanikanda, and they have an additional exemption for one more player due to the International Player Pathway program, involving defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye. Schottenheimer expressed confidence in the running back group, emphasizing the team's commitment to building a competitive roster.
