Head Coach Neal Brown has expressed serious worries about the North Texas Mean Green offensive line as the team gears up for the 2026 season. Following a recent practice, Brown remarked on the unit's struggles, indicating that they are far from meeting the team's requirements. He pointed out deficiencies in the run game and issues with pad level.
Last season, the offensive line was instrumental in North Texas' success, helping the team achieve a national high of 49 rushing touchdowns and earning recognition as the top-scoring offense. Key contributors included offensive guard Gabe Blair, who received First Team All-American Conference honors and was rated as the third-best guard by Pro Football Focus.
With the loss of all five starting offensive linemen, the team is now tasked with rebuilding this critical position. Brown noted that just two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have demonstrated potential during fall camp, with Strong standing out as a key performer.
The coach emphasized the need to find the right mix of players, stating that the team cannot function effectively with only two offensive linemen. All positions on the line are open for competition, as the coaching staff aims to create a strong and effective group before their first game on September 5.
The pressure is mounting on Brown, offensive line coach Matt Mattox, and run game coordinator Mike Bloesch to enhance the offensive line's capabilities before the season starts. Brown cautioned that if the line's performance does not improve, the team will face significant challenges.
