Texas Tech’s quarterback rotation remains unsettled after Tommy Castellanos produced three touchdowns in his first two games with the Red Raiders. Castellanos has appeared in specific situations alongside starter Will Hammond, with the results including both effective plays and a turnover.
Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first snap while trying to throw the ball away, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later took another turn inside the scoring area and ran 3 yards for a touchdown. McGuire said Hammond continues to hold the starting job, while the team will keep designing plays for Castellanos.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency option. The move came after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond is still dealing with a torn ACL, according to the report.
Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ usage among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how it will deploy Castellanos from here, including whether he will continue to be used close to the goal line.
