Baylor University's football defense is set for a major transformation under the guidance of new coordinator Joe Klanderman, who has a history of leading a top 30 ranked defense at Kansas State. The Bears have faced challenges in recent years, conceding an average of 30.8 points and more than 399.9 yards per game since 2023, which has prompted the need for a new strategy.
Klanderman's approach features a 3-3-5 formation that prioritizes versatility, aiming to confuse opposing quarterbacks and force them into making quick decisions. This setup includes three defensive linemen designed to absorb blocks, allowing linebackers the opportunity to pursue the ball effectively.
The revamped defensive scheme is anticipated to improve Baylor's effectiveness in critical moments, especially in red-zone defense and on third downs. Klanderman's previous defenses have shown strength in these areas, and he has recruited talent through the transfer portal to bolster the Bears' defensive unit.
Positional flexibility is a key aspect of Klanderman's system, utilizing hybrid safeties and linebackers to counter the spread offenses common in the Big 12. Players like Travion Barnes, Daniel Cobbs, and Colby McCalister are expected to excel in this adaptable framework.
