In the race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn, both candidates have introduced their plans aimed at improving affordability for Texans. Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee and Texas Attorney General, released his proposal first, followed by James Talarico, the Democratic nominee and state representative.
Paxton's plan, titled Protecting the Texas Promise, focuses on federal tax deductions. It includes a $25,000 deduction for out-of-pocket medical expenses and health insurance premiums, along with additional deductions for first-time homebuyers and healthy-lifestyle spending. He aims to double the federal child tax credit to $4,400 per child under 17.
Conversely, Talarico's New American Dream emphasizes wage increases and debt relief rather than tax deductions. His proposals include repealing tax breaks for the wealthiest earners, implementing universal childcare, and raising the minimum wage. Talarico also advocates for canceling medical debt and establishing a fund to distribute revenue from artificial intelligence companies to Americans.
The two candidates are set to face off in the general election on November 3, with five other candidates also on the ballot. As of late July, polling averages indicated Talarico leading by 1.6 percentage points. Neither candidate has provided a full cost estimate for their plans, which would require congressional approval to be enacted.
