Spurs' 39-point first quarter not enough as Hawks win preseason game 123-116

San Antonio led by 19 after one quarter, but Atlanta won each of the last three quarters and beat the Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday at Frost Bank Center.

A fast start that did not hold

The San Antonio Spurs opened their preseason with a 39-point first quarter on Thursday night, but the Atlanta Hawks spent the rest of the game chasing them down and left Frost Bank Center with a 123-116 win.

Atlanta trailed 39-20 after one quarter and 69-62 at halftime. The Hawks won the third quarter 31-26 and the fourth 30-21.

Who produced

Dylan Harper paced San Antonio with 16 points, hitting three of his five 3-point attempts, and added four assists. Stephon Castle scored 14, David Jones Garcia had 14 and Devin Vassell 12. Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with seven rebounds.

For Atlanta, Asa Newell scored 16 in 14 minutes, Kingston Flemings had 15 points, five assists and three steals, and Dyson Daniels collected 11 rebounds.

Turnovers told the story

The Spurs turned the ball over 21 times, more than twice Atlanta's total of 10. San Antonio did outrebound the Hawks 49-43 and made 28 free throws to Atlanta's 13, but the Hawks hit 18 3-pointers.

The Hawks are 1-1 in the preseason; the Spurs are 0-1. Attendance was 18,354.
