Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured vertebra. The 24-year-old outfielder sustained the injury during a Double-A matchup in Frisco, Texas, which is located approximately 6 miles northeast of The Colony.
The incident occurred when Lasko and teammate Devin Taylor collided while attempting to catch a fly ball. Both players dove for the ball, resulting in Lasko lying motionless on the field immediately after the play. He was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed a spinal decompression and stabilization procedure to address the fracture at the C6–C7 level.
Athletics general manager David Forst issued a statement confirming the organization’s support for Lasko and his family. Forst noted that he has been in contact with Lasko’s mother, Patti, to convey the team’s thoughts and prayers. He specifically thanked Midland athletic trainers Noah Huff and Audy Merrick for their immediate response, as well as the Frisco RoughRiders staff and local paramedics for their assistance at the scene.
The club is directing its medical resources toward Lasko’s recovery. Forst stated that he is encouraged by the medical updates provided by Dr. Poggi. Player development director Ed Sprague is traveling to Frisco to provide counseling to teammates who witnessed the event.
Lasko was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 amateur draft out of Rutgers University. He currently plays for Double-A Midland, where he holds a .209 batting average with six home runs and 34 runs batted in this season. His on-field performance includes a .635 OPS. Last year, he appeared in 13 games for Triple-A Las Vegas and played 21 games in the Arizona Fall League, where he batted .357 with nine stolen bases.
