The Colony senior Rylan Kessler contributed significantly to the Cougars' dominant performance during Thursday night's home opener against Keller Fossil Ridge. Kessler recorded a 20-yard touchdown reception, a one-yard rushing score, and an interception in the first half of the game.
The Cougars established control early, leading 42-0 at halftime after outgaining their opponents 352 to 47 yards. Senior quarterback Jaylen Gaines orchestrated much of the offensive success, completing 15 of 25 passes for 267 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed eight times for 58 yards and added two more scoring runs.
Camari Terrell opened the scoring with a 25-yard reception that capped an eight-play, 63-yard drive. Later in the first half, Aaron Jones caught a 16-yard touchdown pass on an 87-yard, 11-play drive. The defense forced two turnovers in the final five minutes of the second quarter, which The Colony converted into additional points.
The momentum continued into the second half, where Gaines threw his sixth and seventh touchdowns of the night. Ayden Gibson contributed on the ground with 19 carries for 84 yards and a score. The defense recorded two more takeaways in the second period, limiting Fossil Ridge to 102 total yards.
Head coach Rudy Rangel emphasized team cohesion and focus after the win. He noted that the players had an internal motivation to perform well and supported each other throughout the game. Rangel also highlighted the defensive emphasis on forcing turnovers, crediting the new coordinator and coaching staff for their daily preparation.
