A Historic First Quarter

The Houston Cougars established a commanding lead immediately, outscoring the Southern Jaguars 28-0 in the opening period. Conner Weigman connected with Patrick Overmyer for a nine-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. By the end of the half, Houston held a 49-0 lead, having scored 49 total points without allowing any defensive stops that resulted in points for the Jaguars.

Third Quarter Surge

Houston maintained its offensive rhythm in the third quarter, scoring another 21 points. Keisean Henderson broke for a 54-yard rushing touchdown. DJ Butler added a nine-yard rushing score, and John Hebert contributed with a seven-yard run. The only scoring play for the visiting Jaguars came in this period when Wyatt McCauley threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Wydell Clark Jr. The extra point was blocked by Christopher McKenna, leaving the score at 70-6 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Luke Carney ran for an eight-yard touchdown to seal the 77-6 victory. The game was played at TDECU Stadium before an attendance of 28,936. Conner Weigman finished with 120 passing yards on 9-of-12 passing for three touchdowns. Koby Young led the receiving corps with 54 yards and two touchdowns. Zane Smith rushed for 69 yards on 10 carries. For Southern, Wyatt McCauley completed 2-of-3 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown. Armariyan Asberry rushed for six yards on three carries, and Wydell Clark Jr. caught one pass for 79 yards and a touchdown. The win improves Houston's record to 2-0, while Southern drops to 1-2.
