Sixth-Inning Surge Decides Game

The Sacramento Athletics defeated the Houston Astros 6-5 on Saturday, September 26, at Sutter Health Park. The decisive momentum shifted in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the home team scored five runs to take a commanding lead.

This rally was fueled by two runs each from Nick Bolte and Nick Stefanic, who combined to drive in four of the six total runs for Sacramento.

Stefanic initiated the offensive burst by singling to center field, allowing McNeil and Gelof to score. The Athletics continued their pressure as Heim singled to left, bringing home Clarke. Bolte then tripled to center, scoring White and Heim. Finally, Butler grounded into a fielder’s choice to first base, allowing Bolte to cross the plate and extend the lead to 6-1.

Astros Fight Back, Fall Short

Houston had taken an early lead in the fourth inning when Walker homered to left field, a 425-foot shot that put the Astros ahead 1-0. The visitors responded in the top of the seventh with a 366-foot home run to left by Smith, narrowing the gap to 6-2. In the eighth, the Astros mounted a final push.

Altuve hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Wade Jr., and Diaz singled to left to bring in Alvarez. A wild pitch by Athletics pitcher Luis Medina then allowed Paredes to score, bringing the Astros within one run at 5-6.

Pitching and Final Standings

Jacob Lopez earned the win for the Athletics, pitching six innings while allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out four batters. He received two runs of support before the bullpen took over. Seth Johnson, Geoff Hartlieb, Luis Medina, and Hogan Harris combined for the final four innings of relief.

Harris recorded the save, pitching one scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout.

Hunter Brown took the loss for Houston, lasting five and one-third innings. He allowed two hits and one earned run while walking four and striking out four. Bennett Sousa, AJ Blubaugh, Logan VanWey, and Joshua Hendrickson pitched for the Astros in relief. The final score was Athletics 6, Astros 5. The Athletics improved to 64-96, while the Astros fell to 79-81. Attendance was 9,012.
