Early Dominance Defines Outcome
The Montreal Canadiens established control early, scoring three first-period goals to build a lead that Dallas could not overcome in their home arena. Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook each contributed two goals, providing the offensive firepower necessary to secure a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
Montreal struck first when Caufield found the back of the net with a snap shot, assisted by Phillip Danault and Alexandre Carrier. The Stars responded quickly, with Wyatt Johnston tying the game at 1-1 using his own snap shot, powered by assists from Mikko Rantanen and Miro Heiskanen.
However, the Canadiens immediately regained momentum. Alex Newhook restored Montreal's lead with a backhand goal, set up by Noah Dobson and Lane Hutson. Just moments later, Caufield doubled the advantage with his second goal of the game, also on a snap shot, with Adam Engstrom and Juraj Slafkovský earning assists.
Second Period Stability
Montreal continued to press in the middle frame, extending their lead to 4-1 through Newhook’s second career marker. The forward utilized a backhand technique for the tally, with Chris Kreider and Noah Dobson recording assists on the play.
Dallas attempted to rally late in the period. Jamie Benn scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot, cutting the deficit to 4-2. The goal was assisted by Mikko Rantanen, who recorded his second helper of the night, and Wyatt Johnston, who also earned an assist.
