Daniel Had Already Done Most of His Work Before Dallas Scored

FC Dallas beat Seattle 1-0 at Toyota Stadium, with goalkeeper Daniel making seven saves in a shutout that required real work but did not turn every shot into a crisis.

Six Seattle shots had reached Daniel before FC Dallas scored. He stopped all of them. When Kaick finally put Dallas ahead in the 63rd minute, the goalkeeper had already supplied most of the work required for Wednesday’s 1-0 victory at Toyota Stadium.

The shutout was earned. It was also a product of Seattle’s imperfect finishing and Dallas’ ability to survive pressure, which is a more accurate description than pretending the home defense allowed nothing of consequence.

Seattle held 57.2% of possession, put seven shots on target and won 11 corners. Dallas finished with 15 attempts but only three on frame. Those figures establish the shape of the evening: Seattle had more of the ball and more opportunities requiring a goalkeeper’s attention, while Dallas made one attacking sequence matter more than the rest.

Daniel’s first save came in the 13th minute, when Dejan Joveljić’s attempt from the right side of the box was saved centrally. Six minutes later, Jackson Ragen sent a shot from the middle of the box toward the bottom-right corner, and Daniel stopped it.

Joveljić returned to the ledger in the 23rd minute with a shot from the center of the box that Daniel saved centrally. In the 28th, Daniel saved another Joveljić attempt from the middle. Albert Rusnák followed in the 31st minute with a shot from outside the box that Daniel saved in the bottom-left corner.

Those five first-half stops explain the workload behind the shutout. They came from different locations and at intervals that kept Daniel involved. The shot descriptions do not establish that each stop was acrobatic or unusually difficult. Reliability across repeated tests was valuable enough: Dallas reached halftime without needing to recover a deficit.

Seattle kept supplying opportunities after halftime. In the 55th minute, Joveljić headed toward the top center of the goal, and Daniel made the save. After Dallas moved in front, Snyder Brunell tested him from outside the box in the 75th minute, with the attempt saved near the bottom-right corner.

Daniel also dealt with the late stretch in which Seattle continued to collect corners and force Dallas to defend its narrow lead.

There was plenty of defensive labor in front of him. Dallas recorded 30 clearances and nine interceptions, numbers that suggest a team spending substantial time managing danger rather than dictating every phase. Seattle also missed attempts by Joveljić, Paul Arriola and Jordan Morris.

Those misses belong to the Sounders’ finishing account, not Daniel’s save total, but they matter when judging the clean sheet fairly. The goalkeeper stopped what reached the frame; Dallas benefited when other Seattle attempts missed.

Dallas finally changed the scoreboard in the 63rd minute. Following a corner, Osaze Urhoghide provided a headed pass and Kaick finished from the center of the box into the top-left corner. Kaick’s fourth goal of the season made him Dallas’ third-leading scorer and its most productive midfielder by that measure. Urhoghide’s contribution was his third assist.

The goal was valuable precisely because Dallas had not controlled the match through possession. A set-piece chance gave the home side its cleanest route to a lead, and Kaick finished it. The attack did not otherwise turn the match into a steady stream of difficult saves for Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, who made two stops.

Dallas had seven corners of its own, but only three shots on target.

That imbalance leaves the right assessment of the result somewhere between a defensive masterclass and a lucky escape. Dallas created enough to win, Seattle created enough to make the outcome uncomfortable, and Daniel handled the part of the bargain that was his. The 1-0 scoreline was preserved by a goalkeeper who stayed reliable while the match tilted toward the visitors.

The victory ended Seattle’s nine-game unbeaten run, which had included four wins and five draws, and helped Dallas secure a playoff berth when its result combined with Portland’s 2-0 defeat in Los Angeles and Real Salt Lake’s 1-1 draw against San Jose. Those consequences make the night important. They do not change its texture.

Daniel’s seventh save came after Dallas finally had a lead. Most of his evening had been spent keeping the match level, which is a different kind of contribution from protecting a late advantage. Kaick supplied the goal that rewarded it. The clean sheet began well before the one-goal cushion.
