Dallas’s one-goal lead left a tense evening unfinished until stoppage time

Sebastien Ibeagha could not add the second goal. Neither could Shaq Moore. Their late attempts both required saves from Hugo Lloris, leaving FC Dallas to protect the same 1-0 lead it had held since the first half.

The Frisco club held on for a 1-0 victory against LAFC on Saturday at Toyota Stadium, with Osaze Urhoghide’s 34th-minute header separating the teams. Dallas finished with 13 shots to LAFC’s 11 and four shots on target to three, so this was hardly a one-way siege.

But the match’s tension came from the way LAFC kept producing moments after Dallas went ahead—and from the fact that Dallas continued creating chances without finding the second goal that would have made the ending less theatrical.

The first serious warning arrived shortly after halftime. In the 49th minute, Jeremy Ebobisse got an attempt away from very close range after Armindo Sieb’s headed pass. Jonathan Sirois saved it in the top center of the goal.

That was one of the three saves credited to Dallas’s goalkeeper, but it carried more weight than the total suggests: LAFC had found a dangerous position before the match had fully settled into its second-half rhythm.

Dallas answered with its own pressure. Christian Cappis missed from the right side of the box in the 54th minute, and Santiago Moreno sent a left-side attempt high one minute later after Shaq Moore’s involvement in the move. Moore then supplied a more direct threat in the 69th minute, though his shot from the left side of the box was blocked.

Those attempts kept Dallas involved at the attacking end. They also left the problem unresolved: without another goal, every LAFC chance still carried the possibility of a tie.

At the 73rd minute, LAFC appeared to add the answer. Sieb scored, but the goal was overturned after a video review. The no-goal decision came in the 74th minute. For Dallas, the practical consequence was obvious enough: the lead remained one.

Five minutes later, Dallas nearly created the breathing room it needed. Sebastien Ibeagha put a right-footed shot on target from the center of the box, and Hugo Lloris saved it in the center of the goal. It was a genuine Dallas chance in a stretch often remembered only for LAFC’s pressure.

The defending team was still attacking; it simply could not convert the opportunity that might have changed the final minutes.

Moore came close again in the 89th minute. His right-footed effort from a difficult angle on the left was saved in the bottom-left corner by Lloris. Dallas earned a corner soon afterward, and the late push showed that the home side had not abandoned forward play. Still, the finishing margin stayed stubbornly at zero beyond Urhoghide’s header.

Then came the final examination. In the third minute of stoppage time, Sergi Palencia received a cross from Sergio Vasquez and directed a shot from the center of the box toward the top-left corner. Sirois saved it. Dallas conceded no equalizer, but it did concede the kind of chance that makes a one-goal lead uncomfortable until the last whistle.

The goal itself had been a clean route to advantage: Joaquín Valiente’s corner found Urhoghide, whose header went to the top-right corner. Dallas had only two corners all night, which made the delivery especially valuable. LAFC had 51.6% possession and completed more passes, yet Dallas had enough attacking volume to keep the game from becoming pure survival.

Dallas generated 13 shots, Ibeagha and Moore both forced saves late, and Valiente’s set piece supplied the difference. But LAFC’s close-range Ebobisse chance, the overturned Sieb goal and Palencia’s stoppage-time effort show how little separation one successful corner created. FC Dallas earned the points; it never made them feel safely earned.
