The Colony has registered a $26 million recreation center project with the state, describing a job that would remodel about 41,000 square feet inside an existing building, add an 18,500-square-foot wing and rework about 6 acres of parking and grounds.
The filing, made Oct. 8 with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, lists the city as owner and Huitt-Zollars, an engineering and architecture firm with a Dallas address, as designer. It gives an estimated start date of Oct. 5, 2026, and an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2027, for 59,500 square feet of space in all.
The record says the project involves public funds or public land.
As of Sunday the project's status read "Project Registered." The state page notes that the owner must have the finished building inspected by a registered accessibility specialist within a year after construction ends. The start date in the filing is an estimate and does not by itself show that crews are on site.
Which building
The filing is titled The Colony Recreation Center but lists its location as 4431 Augusta St., the same address it gives for the city as owner. City publications use that address for The Colony Senior Center. The city's website lists the current recreation center, a membership facility with a gymnasium and indoor pickleball, at 5151 N. Colony Blvd.
The filing does not explain the difference, includes no drawings and does not say whether any facility would close during the work.
