The Colony Police Department is inviting residents to its headquarters Tuesday evening for Texas National Night Out.

The department will hold an open house and touch-a-truck event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 5151 N. Colony Blvd. The event is free.

Texas observes National Night Out on the first Tuesday in October, a few months after most of the country, to avoid the summer heat. The city describes the night's goals as raising awareness of crime and drug prevention and strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

Two ways to take part

Residents can come to the department's citywide celebration, or they can host a gathering on their own street, such as a block party or potluck, and register it so officers can stop by. The city posts a 2026 registration form on its National Night Out page.

Questions about registering a neighborhood event go to the department's community resource officers, Rick De La Cruz (972-624-3934) and Karla Diaz. General questions can go to 972-625-8273, and the police department's main line is 972-625-1887.

Background

National Night Out began in 1984 through the National Association of Town Watch and now draws more than 37 million participants across North America, according to the city. In its description of the program, the city notes that information from residents is "the most effective means available to police for crime prevention."

The department also runs a few year-round programs residents can use, including an Exchange Zone, a camera-monitored spot in the police parking lot for completing online sales, and online police reporting through the department's website.
