Lewisville ISD trustees could take a first step Tuesday toward leasing out B.B. Owen Elementary, one of five schools the district closed after the 2024-25 school year.
The board's Oct. 13 agenda includes a vote on a non-binding letter of intent to enter into one or more ground leases for three of those former campuses: B.B. Owen, Creekside Elementary and Polser Elementary. The agenda does not name a prospective tenant, describe how the buildings would be used or list terms, and no supporting document is posted with the item.
Trustees are scheduled to discuss the purchase, exchange, sale or value of real property in closed session before acting on the letter in open session.
How the schools closed
Trustees voted in December 2024 to close five elementary schools, one in each high school feeder pattern, as enrollment fell, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported at the time. Closing B.B. Owen reshaped attendance zones for Ethridge, Peters Colony, Morningside, Camey and Memorial elementary schools, all in The Colony High School feeder.
Creekside's students were split among Lewisville, Lakeland and Degan elementaries, and Polser's moved to Hebron Valley Elementary.
At the time, the Gazette reported, district enrollment stood at 47,711 against an optimal building capacity of 62,508, and some residents at the meeting spoke out against the closures.
Since then the district has declared other buildings surplus that could be sold or leased to raise money. Its August financial report lists land sale proceeds totaling $80.6 million.
