The Colony is asking residents of every age to turn things headed for the bin into art about their city.

Keep The Colony Beautiful's Recycled Art Project contest takes the theme "The Colony: Past, Present & Future." It is open to anyone who lives in the city, with entries judged in four categories: elementary school, middle school, high school and adult, according to the city's announcement.

What counts

Most of each piece has to be made from recycled materials. Glue, tape, wire, paint, markers and other basic art supplies are allowed, but soiled trash, food waste and anything hazardous are not. Sculptures must be stable and stand on their own. Work cannot carry vulgar or inappropriate words or images, and the artist's name should not appear on the front.

Judges will weigh creative use of recycled materials at 40%, craftsmanship at 30% and presentation and overall look at 30%. The city says prize details are coming soon.

Key dates

  • Entry deadline: 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. Email the entry form and up to three photos of the piece to the address listed on the city's contest page.
  • Drop-off: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at the City Hall Annex, 6804 Main St.
  • Judging: Saturday morning, Dec. 5, before the public viewing.
  • Public viewing and winners: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Annex, where winners will be announced.

Artists must collect their work by the end of the viewing. Pieces left behind will be recycled.
