Lewisville ISD has 26 prekindergarten-through-fourth-grade classrooms with more than 22 students per teacher, and trustees are being asked Tuesday, Oct. 13, to approve state waivers for all of them.
Four of the classes are kindergarten sections at Memorial Elementary, each with 23 students, according to the district's request on the board's consent agenda. Memorial is one of the elementary schools in The Colony High School feeder pattern; in 2024, when the district closed B.B.
Owen Elementary, the Meridian and Hidden Cove neighborhoods were moved from Memorial to Camey Elementary, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported at the time.
What the waiver means
The Texas Education Agency requires districts to survey enrollment in prekindergarten through fourth grade and to request an exception for any class above 22 students per teacher. If trustees approve, each affected campus must send parents written notice of the state exception within 31 days, the human resources staff report says.
Classes that later go over the limit will not need another board vote, though the district says it will still follow the filing and parent-notice rules and keep trustees informed.
The report attributes much of the recent rise in waiver requests to teacher shortages in Texas and nationally.
