The Dallas-area walk for Breakthrough T1D, the type 1 diabetes research nonprofit once called the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is coming to Grandscape in The Colony on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The fundraiser features a 1.5-mile walk along with family activities, entertainment and community resources for people living with the autoimmune disease, Plano Magazine reported. Plano resident John Dillon and Sarah Morris share the co-chair role this year.

Schedule

According to the magazine, activities start at 8 a.m. An opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. with a parade for people who have the disease and a flag ceremony in which attendees can mark their own connection to the disease. The walk itself starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by refreshments and family activities.

Organizers also plan a wall for notes of encouragement, a display tracing key moments in diabetes research, plus signs recognizing local residents who have type 1 diabetes.

Where the money goes

Dillon, whose family has been involved with the organization for the past three years, said contributions support research and care. "Every dollar and every step go toward expanding physical and mental health resources, funding a cure, and raising the awareness this disease deserves," he told the magazine.

Upward of 1.5 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes, and the magazine reported that the count is expected to hit 2 million in 2040. The organization funds research aimed at better treatments, preventing complications and, ultimately, cures.
